It is all too easy to form an impression of Mozart as the genius who, though sometimes feted by great and good, ended up starving in an attic. The truth, however, is far more interesting.
So, what was musical life in Vienna really like in those last ten years of Mozart's life? As a mainly freelance composer, how did he make a living? What sort of music was he expected to write, and how did he respond? Was he really as unsuccessful as he is often made out to have been? As we explore a selection of his music, we shall trace the ups and downs of his relationship with his audiences, and also consider what was so special as to mark him out from his lesser contemporaries.

By Didier Descouens - Own work,
In the 1000 years from the founding of Constantinople to its fall in 1453, Byzantium developed a vibrant and very distinctive art, focusing particularly on painting and decorative arts.
This day will start with the art of the Early Byzantine Empire which found its own voice between the art traditions of late Rome and the emerging needs of the Christian church with its rich statuary and architecture, not least the large churches of Hagia Sophia and Ravenna, before concentrating on the art of the Middle Byzantine Empire and the rise of Icon painting and enamel work, before ending the day with a look at late byzantine wall painting with its distinctive dark blue backgrounds as in Hagia Irene and the monasteries in Greece, Trabzon and Serbia.

This course follows on from Ashley's evening talk on the English Radical Tradition in October. In light of the current revivalism on the left of British politics for a continuity of ‘radical traditions’ he will be trying to provide some perspective by exploring the common and divergent responses across the British Isles to the social, political and economic transformations that occurred from the Napoleonic Wars until the start of the First World War. He will explore a range of issues:
-
How close did Britain come to experiencing a European-style revolution in the first half of the 19th century?
-
How should we assess the campaigns to extend the franchise such as the Chartists and campaigns for female suffrage?
-
How far did the development of the socialism of Robert Owen, the Co-operative movement and Trade Unionism shape the trajectory of British history?
-
Was Ireland the real ‘radical heart’ of the British Isles in the ‘long’ 19th century?
