About Glossop Guild

Glossop Guild is a community formed in 2009 to promote liberal education in and around the town. Glossop is a former mill town at the northern end of the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom. The Guild is a not for profit organisation, independent of Government agencies which strives to promote a wide range of courses, all of which are provided for the interest and enlightenment of participants. The Guild aims to select tutors on the basis of their ability to present lively and challenging courses, as well as for their expertise and experience. Members and participants are encouraged to contribute their own views and engage in informative discussions.

Membership costs £10 and is renewable annually from 1st May. Payment by Standing Order is encouraged which helps us by ensuring that adequate funds are available to meet costs of printing and insurance, at times when income from courses is limited. Forms can be obtained from the website membership page or from the Treasurer by post.

A guild does not exist without its members. Benefits of membership include:-

Discounts on course fees;

Early copies of the annual course booklet with full details of courses offered by the Guild;

Invitation to meetings of the Guild, including the AGM and Members’ Evenings;

Opportunities to comment on the running of courses and to suggest topics for future courses.

Because the Guild does not have reserve funds, it has to guard against having to pay cancellation fees. For this reason, we ask that you honour the early booking deadlines, so ensuring that courses will be viable. Deadlines are often extended for courses which prove viable but are not initially fully booked. Sometimes capacity is limited, either by the facilities available at the venue or in the interests of a successful interactive course. The best way to ensure that a course will run and that you have a place on it is by booking early. Despite these uncertainties, most courses do run, either because they are well-subscribed or because they are subsidised by income from other courses. Please assume that the courses you have booked will run. We will advise you in good time, if for any reason a course has to be cancelled, in which case you will be refunded.
