Please note that the gardens are on the side of a valley so there are some steep slopes, compacted gravel paths, steps and terraces. Parts of the garden are unsuitable for wheelchairs.​

Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope
A talk outlining the requirements for life and where and how we might find life, or evidence of past life, elsewhere. Firstly in our own Solar System targeting Mars and two moons; Europa orbiting Jupiter and Enceladus orbiting Saturn. We now know over 3,000 other planets, some within their star's habitable zone where water could be a liquid. Might we find evidence of life there? It could be that other advanced civilisations might be trying to contact us - the subject of SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence). Finally the talk will consider how likely it is that other life, simple or advanced, exists in our Galaxy.
Ian Morison is Emeritus Gresham Professor of Astronomy, having recently held the oldest chair of astronomy in the world and is in his 54th year at the Jodrell Bank Observatory. He has written 6 books on astronomy along with many magazine articles and is a founder member and now patron of the Macclesfield Astronomical Society.

Art of the Byzantine Empire ~ Saturday Day School

In the 1000 years from the founding of Constantinople to its fall in 1453, Byzantium developed a vibrant and very distinctive art, focusing particularly on painting and decorative arts.
This day will start with the art of the Early Byzantine Empire which found its own voice between the art traditions of late Rome and the emerging needs of the Christian church with its rich staurary and architecture, not least the large churches of Hagia Sophia and Ravenna, before concentrating on the art of the Middle Byzantine Empire and the rise of Icon painting and enamel work, before ending the day with a look at late byzantine wall painting with its distinctive dark blue backgrounds as in Hagia Irene and the monasteries in Greece, Trabzon and Serbia.
This course has been cancelled due to family illness.
We hope to re-schedule this course next year.

This is a visit to one of the newest Art Galleries in the country. It has been purpose built to reflect the structures and qualities of the Modern Art on display. The gallery is set in the middle of the city alongside the river, regenerating not only the land but our ideas of Art. We will explore the ground-breaking work of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore as well as try to understand the elements of Modern Art. There will also be an opportunity to look at the work of contemporaries of the two artists on display in adjoining galleries, including Bomberg, Lowry, Auerbach, Piper and many more. The museum also hosts changing exhibitions which we will be able to see, depending on availability.
