Glossop Lion 1847

Overview

The Glossop Guild was formed in 2009 to promote liberal education in and around the town.

Glossop is a former mill town at the northern end of the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom. The Guild is a non-profit organisation which endeavours to promote a wide range of courses, all of which we provide for the interests and enlightenment of participants. The Guild aims to select tutors on the basis of their ability to present lively and challenging courses, as well as for their expertise and experience. Members and participants are encouraged to contribute their own views and engage in informative discussion. All courses are open to both members and non-members.

Coronavirus: Update

After the success of our on-line Autumn 2020 and Spring 2021 programmes we will be continuing to offer some courses using the internet this autumn. We are also hoping to run a limited programme of venue based courses from October 2021 subject to government guidelines.

Summer Term 2021 - Cancelled

Unfortunately due to the present Covid19 situation we are unable to bring you our usual summer programme of courses and visits. Our new courses for the autumn term will begin again in October.  In the meantime our friends at "Zooming through the past" are running a series of historically based lectures which we can recommend to members. For more details contact Dr Alan Sennett or use the link:-  https://mancent.org.uk/?page_id=4010

Special arrangements for AGM

Due to the ongoing situation with the pandemic special arrangements have been made to conduct the 2021 Guild AGM by email. More information about this can be obtained on the Events page of this website.

Autumn Programme 2021

The spring term programme has been very well received and achieved very encouraging numbers of attendees. A poll of our members has revealed that a majority of the Guild members would like to continue with a mix of Zoom and venue based lectures as we gradually get back to a more normal life-style, post Covid19.  To this end our course organiser Maggie Mooney and all the committee members are presently working on a new programme of courses for the autumn that will include both on-line (Zoom) lectures and venue based lectures. It is quite a challenge to organise in these two different ways especially with the continued uncertainty surrounding future government guidance on Covid19. Having said that the courses we have managed to arrange look very exciting.

Here are details of just a few to whet your appetite. Full detail are now available on the courses pages.

The Devil's Decade -

Alan Sennett & Creina Mansfield will examine  the 1930s in a series of lectures as seen through the lens of history and literature.

The Strange Case of British Art -

The ever popular Frank Vigon will present a Day School on British art from 1900-1951 the period of post-war art and post-impressionism.
