Glossop Lion 1847

Overview

The Glossop Guild was formed in 2009 to promote liberal education in and around the town.

Glossop is a former mill town at the northern end of the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom. The Guild is a non-profit organisation which endeavours to promote a wide range of courses, all of which we provide for the interests and enlightenment of participants. The Guild aims to select tutors on the basis of their ability to present lively and challenging courses, as well as for their expertise and experience. Members and participants are encouraged to contribute their own views and engage in informative discussion. All courses are open to both members and non-members.

Following on from the autumn 2023 term, Maggie Mooney and the rest of the Guild committee have been hard at work compiling yet another diverse programme. This term we have two more new faces on our lecturing team Professor Andrew Russell who will introduce us to the issues surrounding the forthcoming General Election and Nick Birch who will lead us through the dangerous world of Poisons!  There are lots more lectures and courses this term which are explained in full on our courses pages.

Due to popular demand we have maintained a mix of online (Zoom) courses and venue courses based in Glossop. Courses commence on 13th January 2024 and run until the end of March.

Some of the interesting subjects in our spring 2024 programme

Bess of Hardwick & the Devonshires - follow up!

We have received this note from Carol Jonson one of our members:-

I get a quarterly magazine called ‘This England’ by subscription and the Winter one popped through my letter box yesterday. I have been getting it for many years and I think it is very good.

The Bess of Hardwick article is in this Winter issue. The photography is excellent and the tapestries have been restored and are so clear.

I will certainly bring my copy to the Christmas meeting for anyone that wishes to see it.

Glossop Guild AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Guild will be held this year on Monday 22nd April at 7pm at Glossop Labour Club. Further details can be found on the "Events" page of this website.

Victorian Manchester Zoom course cancelled - 18th March 2024

Due to circumstances beyond our control this course has been cancelled. However we are pleased to announce that Kevin Harrison has kindly agreed to fill this vacant Zoom slot and will present a talk on Josephine Butler an English feminist and social reformer in the Victorian era.
