Glossop Lion 1847
The Glossop Guild was formed in 2009 to promote liberal education in and around the town.
Glossop is a former mill town at the northern end of the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom. The Guild is a non-profit organisation which endeavours to promote a wide range of courses, all of which we provide for the interests and enlightenment of participants. The Guild aims to select tutors on the basis of their ability to present lively and challenging courses, as well as for their expertise and experience. Members and participants are encouraged to contribute their own views and engage in informative discussion. All courses are open to both members and non-members.
In light of the clear advice set out today by Government, the Guild has regrettably, and despite the emails that we have recently sent out to our members, decided we should cancel Guild events for the time being.
Given the average age of our membership and this latest advice we think this would be the responsible approach for us to take now.
Accordingly, the final "Comics" session by Frank Vigon; the final "Linnaeus" session by Bob Callow, and the day school "Plants & Easter" by Patrick Harding are all cancelled. Members should also note our summer courses are also cancelled; and no further bookings can be made for them.
Refunds for the full or part fees "wasted" will be made, but please give us some time to prepare those.
Glossop Guild 16th March 2020
We continue to work on the Autumn Term programme which we hope to begin in September however we will of course be guided by the British Government's advice regarding the safety of our members and visitors.
The following letter has been sent to all members:-
The purpose of this letter is to set out the revised arrangements for the Annual General Meeting and for the next few months. We had expected to hold the AGM on Monday 27 April. Unfortunately the exceptional circumstances caused by the Covid 19 virus, which have already resulted in the cancellation of courses, mean that the AGM cannot go ahead as planned.
The committee have looked for ways to keep members properly informed, to safeguard their wellbeing and to respect the Guild’s constitution.
The new arrangements are:
The formal Annual General Meeting will be postponed until September or October, depending on government advice.
Members will be sent by email or post the annual reports from the Chairman and Treasurer. The draft minutes of the 2019 AGM are on our website.
The current committee members will continue to serve on the committee until the formal AGM takes place. They will complete any refunds due from course cancellations and continue to work on the 2020/2021 programme, which we hope will begin on 28 September.
Members are invited to use the Guild’s email account (see above) for any queries or concerns they may have- or simply to keep in touch.
For urgent and crucial information members will be contacted by email or post but we will use the website above for updates of general interest.
We hope the new arrangements are clear and helpful, and that all our members and their families stay safe and healthy during this difficult time. We look forward to seeing you again when it is safe to do so.
With best wishes,
The Guild Committee
Mike Webb, Diana Cavanagh, Jane Murray, Maggie Mooney, John Coupe,
Richard Leyshon, Rose Kendrick, Chriss Webb, Bill Murray
